"Dutch Schultz"--real name Arthur Flegenheimer--looks predominantly Alpine to me--with just the faintest ghost of Armenoid in his profile. It's so watered down, though, as to fall beneath casual observation.

I know he was ethnically Jewish, but he doesn't look especially Levantine. In fact, he bears a striking resemblance to my cousins' German-Lutheran grandfather, who has zero extra-European ancestry.

So was most of Schultz's Middle Eastern ancestry bred out? Who can say?

* Odd footnote: Schultz converted to Catholicism. As poet Heinrich Heine and composer Felix Mendelssohn prove, it was typical behavior for an upper-class European Jew, but rather odd behavior for an American gangster.

I'm the first to say I don't have a good eye for classifying peoples' pehotype, but I thought the same thing when I looked at these photos. Maybe I'm getting better at it, but I'm still too "shy" to expression my opinion publically before someone else.

Many gangsters have similar looks as if they're descended from the same mobster tribe. It's not limited to Jewish gangsters. The Irish and the Italians have the same look. It must come from the lifestyle of organized crime.

he seems a mix between Donald Sutherland/Toby Maguire with a flat nosed/broad eyed elements of Edward G Robinson.

it would be interesting to post a selection of classic Jewish Gangsters and see how far they deviate from the classic 'Armenoid' and 'Alpinid' standards of most Ashkenazis (aka, hard to imagin Einstein as a Gangster)
