^^^^Thanks for the informative post, Fael. You and I were on the same page about the Merovingians (mentioned in my previous post). They were usurped by the Carolingians. I don't think that they were descended from Jesus Christ, though. There are so many crazy theories about them. It's sad that people actually believe that fiction, like "The DaVinci Code", is factual. Many of the related legends have been proven to be hoaxes and nonsense. People still believe in them, though.
I agree with your statement about the use of mercenary warriors to increase the territory of the chiefs. I think that Europe was a tribal society before the pre-feudalism era to which we're referring. Feudalism just cemented the power and the structure of the various royal dynasties IMO. You can see that "cement" just by looking at the British royal family tree, which can be traced back to Egbert.
